Portovenere and the Gulf of Lerici

Explore the bays of Tellaro, Lerici and Le Grazie. Here you will bath in the clear waters and have lunch on board followed by some relax in the sun! On the way back we will keep sailing towards the Island Palmaria and the Island of Tino, taking a striking view of Portovenere and its enchanting marina by the sea. Enjoy some fishing and learn some basic sailing rules.

Seafood and fishing in Viareggio

Viareggio has a very nice peer which runs to the lighthouse and onto the sea. Every morning and evening fishermen display their fish for selling directly on the quays: anchovies, squids, seabeams, seabass and shrimps. A triumph of colours together with the smell of sea and fish.

Typical seafood recipes

Viareggio is particularly famous for its ‘Cacciucco’. This is a fish soup based on different kinds of fish and shellfish such as cuttlefish, octopus, red mullet, scorpion fish. It is a main course plate which is usually accompanied with bread croutons. All restaurants in the area will include it in their menus, though I would look for a special homemade one.

The cetacean’ sanctuary

Off the coast of Viareggio, you will easily spot groups of dolphins. This part of the Mediterrenean Sea is particularly known to biologists and researchers as the Santuario Pelagos, whale sanctuary. This stretch of sea from Northern Tuscany coast to the Ligurian sea is subject to the passage of whales and a favourable environment for doplhins which can be sighted in groups. Meeting with the dolphins is an amazing experience both for kids and adults and in this area of Tuscany is not that difficult to be satisfied.
