Lucca cultural and gourmet tour
We will walk around Lucca historical centre threading where silk merchants lived and built their palaces as well as on Puccini’s footsteps and in search of the top foodies experiences. We will start our visit from Porta Elisa, in front of the old medieval walls to walk through the romans trails, visiting the most important civil and religious sights of the historical centre. There will be time to stop for typical snacks and tasting at one of the oldest bakery shops and the famous ‘buccellato’. Other stops at typical shops will not be missed, such as a ‘700 old barley shop since and the socalled Zecca, where coins were made, with a demostration of the making of process.
Lucca was known in the Middle ages for being one of the biggest silk producer. Thousands weavers worked in town and filled the air with their rythmic noise. We will visit a modern workshop, which still works silk with a XVIIth century weaver and dye its own silk with natural hues.
Moreover, Lucca is very famous, along with Florence, Siena and Arezzo, for its goldsmiths. We will make some window shopping along the main street and admire their charming interiors. Last but not least, we might leave time to visit a fashion atelier, managed by one of the most skillful tailors in town, hosted in a frescoed historical palace.
Lucca is full of history, legends and artisanal workshops that deserve a visit alongg with its magnificent historical buildings and monuments.
Lucca DOP EVOO
The area surrounding Lucca is unique, not only for the splendor of its natural landscapes, but also for its distinctive local food products, in particular DOP extra virgin olive oil. Like all the DOP extra virgin olive oils, the one from Lucca is subject to chemical and organoleptic tests by a panel, in order to verify the absence of defects and the presence of typical positive attributes: fruity, bitter and pungent. The DOP EVOO in Lucca has all these characteristics confirmig itself among the best in Italy.
If you drive around Lucca hills, we recommend to follow the Wine&Oil trail, where you will be able to find sevaral farms and wineries ready to offer tastings and guided tours. October/November are the best period to enjoy some Oil pressing and tasting, if not harvesting.
