Bolgheri wine region
The area of Bolgheri is characterised by extensive vineyard and olive tree cultivations. Castagneto Carducci, a lovely medieval hamlet, is the largest town in the area. The wine region has gained the DOC appellation in 1995. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted the first Cabernet vineyard in Castiglioncello di Bolgheri in 1944. The first bottle of Sassicaia appeared in 1968, as the first example of Italian cru. It represents the perfect adaptation of the Bordeaux grape varieties to the Bolgheri climate. In fact ‘Supertuscan’ appellation takes its origin from being a Tuscan wine with extraordinary taste given by the blend with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The main carachteristic of these wines is the composition: half sangiovese native grapes, half French grapes. There are currently 52 companies which operate in the territory.
