Camaiore is one f the largest town in Versilia area. It has Roman origins and was considered an important station along the Via Cassia. From this we find the origins of the name “Campus Maior” (Campo Maggiore). In the Middle Ages, the town grew thanks to the old Francigena, which follows northwest from Lucca, towards the Lunigiana and Passo della Cisa. The city represented the Twenty-seventh stage during the journey of Sigerico Canterbury to Rome. Today Camaiore is a charming town rich of history and traditions, like the famous saw-dust carpets realised for the Corpus Domini celebrations in June.
Pietrasanta has Roman origins as Camaiore and was founded in 1255 upon the preexisting “Rocca di Sala” fortress of the Longobards by Luca Guiscardo da Pietrasanta, from whom it got its name. It was annexed under the Medici family in the 15th century. Today Pietrasanta is world famous for its art shops and galleries and is known as Little-Athens.
